Three hopeless romantics

New beginnings are the flavour of the day

“It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you place the blame.”

So, myself and my sister have an obsession with retro video games. Especially Super Nintendo games. So much so that our playing of them is occupying so much of my time that I'm unable to write a substantial post. So I decided to share with you guys some of my classy geekery, just in case anyone out there is alien to these LIFE ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCES! So, here's J's personal top ten retro games! (Retro being pre-N64/PS1/DC by my definition)

10) Mario Paint

9) The 7th Guest (bit of a cult game, highly recommended)

8) Super Mario Kart

7) Sonic The Hedgehog

6) Final Fantasy VI

5) The Legend of Zelda

4) Super Mario Bros.

3) Super Street Fighter II: Turbo (or any of the Street Fighter II's to be honest XD)

2) Super Mario Bros. 3

1) The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past - in my arrogant opinion, the best game ever (and yes that includes Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII (and don't anyone dare say Halo 3...))

Haha, don't you just love the symmetry of the top five? Anyhow, that's my two cents, as they say.
If you haven't played any of these, then I definitely recommend you seek them out and ENJOY!

And by the way, any one own 3D Dot Heroes (the game in the picture)? I'd really like to hear people's opinions on it if any can be offered.

Sincerely
J

  1. Those retro games were so much fun, I don't know why, they just were. The Mario & Zelda games in particular, were just so well designed given their technology limits. Never played 3D Dot Heroes, but one of my friends has it. Looks like a lovely homage to 8-bit.

  2. Everything I've read about it would seem to suggest that it would be right up my street. I can't begin to explain how much Mario makes me and my sister laugh when we play it. She's not a big gamer, in fact she's an all in all she's a pretty cool socialite, but when we're both stuck at home it's just what we do, and it's what we've always done. And as you say, there's just that kind of "je ne sais quoi" that makes them soooo much fun! XD

  3. Retro games were art not only in the actual gameplay, but in the making of them. The hardware of the SNES wasn't all that hot, but it was versatile. There was no Nintendo-maintained toolkit for building games. The processor would do whatever you ask it to. This let true code wizards take center stage, and they worked in mysterious ways. The standard example of the Mario Bush/Cloud re-coloring is the most visible aspect of this. Things were re-used as much as possible, in very creative ways.
